Violet Gray, a growing collection of sacred jewels and objects. Each piece has been intentionally created and collected, then offered to act as a daily reminder for the positive changes, beliefs or manifestations that you intend to bring into your one beautiful life.
I was so excited to be able to catch up with Alexandra (YAY for name twins), one half of the sister duo creating the most beautiful intentional jewellery, created not just to be added to the already overflowing jewellery collections in our lives, but to offer something of meaning we can wear every day. I can testify to this – you might notice in almost every photo of me I am wearing my beautiful Sacral Chakra necklace.
Your brand was named after and inspired by the birth of your niece, Violet Gray. I love this as I am also very close to my family, my nephews are my favourite people in the entire world! How long before the birth of baby Violet Gray was the brand Violet Gray in the back of your minds to begin?
To be completely honest, I was making jewellery for years before the real Miss Violet Gray was born in March 2010. It has always been one of my ‘go to’ creative pursuits. Before the brand Violet Gray, (amongst many) I had another little label called ‘Lilly White’ but the call for more travel was strong. Even though the label was growing really successfully after only 6 months, I packed up and headed to Turkey. It was always my intention to pursue the jewellery and I knew that at some stage I needed to give it a shot or move on to another plan.
So fast forward almost a year and I was in the Mediterranean working on Yachts when our oldest sister, Scarlet was pregnant. I cut up all of my beaded leather, stone bracelets and made her a ‘blessing strand’ which is basically a length of stones, seeds and beads that is believed to be filled with the creators energy. I sent it to her, love filled and rustic, explaining that all of the strength and support I had to offer was in that strand. When she held it, she held me.
So we lived in Turkey and Spain for about 18 months, then I said to my boyfriend that I needed to give it a shot. We moved to Indonesia in 2012 for this purpose and I began to create – at this stage, Blessing jewellery and beaded (intentional) bracelets. When it came time to name the selection of jewels that I had been crafting, Violet Gray just felt right. She was the very reason I began to make pregnancy related jewellery… And four years later, we still love the name and story behind it just as much. Here is to hoping we do for a lifetime to come….
And the real Violet – she is ridiculously cute, blonde and free spirited. An inspiration in our worlds.
You have both travelled extensively, I’m sure finding inspiration for Violet Gray on every adventure. What are some of the experiences, good and bad, you’ve had all over the world that have helped you create and grow your business?
I believe that inspiration comes in all moments, from all experiences. It can be the simple, ‘nothing’ moments that evoke the best ideas. Like our globally loved Chakra range (necklaces and charms). They came to me on a regular afternoon walk, just strolling along the path next to the ocean in Kirra, Queensland. I know when an idea is a winner, it is like all of the cells in my body pulse.
In saying this, travel is my first love. I feel the most free and unrestricted when I am on the road in lands unknown. When I can land softly and get amongst the chaos, not speaking the language or being ‘part’ of anything. Being the witness to ‘what is’ in that moment. I live in a constant inspired space, so for me it is about being able to discern and walk away from a situation, opportunity or idea that is not in alignment with the brand, regardless of the logic. Inspiration is everywhere when I am on the road, I am unable to gage how much it actually influences our creations. But I can feel it does, hugely and subtly all at the same time.
It seems every day I am meeting more and more people who are finding peace and guidance through knowledge of the chakras. Could you explain the chakras and why you have so strongly incorporated them into your jewellery range?
To break it down really simply, imagine that inside your physical body you have 7 energetic areas that are like spinning wheels of energy (or prana). All of the major chakras are situated in a vertical line starting at the base of your spine right up to the top or crown of your head. This is a core line for the flow of vital energy or prana (life force) which keeps us healthy and alive. When there is a blockage in energy or if it is not flowing optimally, you will experience different levels of ‘dis-ease’ or imbalance in your life. We believe that is is important to understand what each Chakra represents and how they are linked to different areas of yourself and life. Then, explore how to keep your own energy flowing freely.
I am of the belief that we are always ‘blocked’ somewhere, it is a life long commitment to the self to continue to clear your own energy. Most commonly, this can be achieved by Chakra meditations, visualisations or by just focusing on these areas – including using colour therapy.
The Chakra charms are another tool as they act as tactile reminders of the areas of ourselves that we are working on or balancing. They have been created to be interchangeable, so to support the notion of impermanence. You can either purchase the whole kit of 7 charms or collect them mindfully over time. Then, every time you catch a glimpse of your necklace or touch it – it connects the wearer back into the moment and into that physical / mental / spiritual area of the self.
When you feel like you are ready to move on you can spread your charm kit out and see which one you are drawn to. Sometimes we don’t even know how we are feeling, so to use a tactile tool is a way of (re)connecting with ourselves. Women are incredibly intuitive beings, we are always drawn to what we ‘need’ in that moment.
Over the past year or so I am constantly coming across or drawn to references to the Third Eye Chakra. What could this mean!?
Well – this is the advice I always offer first (which can be frustrating) but, ask yourself!
Nobody knows ourselves better than ourselves and I don’t believe that anybody can tell us what we need or why we are the way we are.
If I was drawn to the Third Eye Chakra, I would start by researching into it and then quietly reflecting on how I was feeling. It will make sense.
The function of Third Eye Chakra? To obtain a conscious perception of being. It is the seat of our higher mental powers. It influences the areas of our mind that control common sense, wisdom, intelligence, memory retention, dreams, spirituality and intuition. This Chakra encourages us to search for the difference between truth and illusion, the two forces present in each moment. Trust what you cannot see, it is more truthful than what you can.
If this Chakra is imbalanced or not flowing freely, you may be experiencing a tendency to think too much and constantly over analyse. Maybe right now you are prone to mood swings, lack of vision, vague / muddled thoughts and / or an inability to make decisions, feeling inadequate, trouble learning from experiences (so repeating the same behaviour) and difficulty being open to others ideas.
Is there a certain piece from the collection either of you wear every day and hold especially close to your heart?
If I speak on behalf of both of us (Franny just had a baby a few months ago so is spending time in the Mumma bubble) it would be our Chakra necklaces. We are so attached to them and the way they connect us personally with our own intentions. At the moment I am wearing my Ajna (or Third Eye / Brow) Chakra charm in Rose Gold. I guess you could say that one of my own personal desires right now is to connect with my intuition. To allow this energy to guide me into aligned situations that flow…
This is the power of these necklaces – they mean something unique to each wearer. And it feels kind of like wearing sexy underwear under pyjamas, it is a secret just for you.
Who is your ultimate Violet Gray girl, if you could see your designs on anyone in the world?
It is ANY woman who desires a more in-depth connection with herself. I believe all women are equal, I don’t glorify status on any level and I believe that all women are more the same than we realise. Violet Gray becomes like a subtle uniform or badge – you know if you see a woman also wearing a VG piece, you will probably be more similar than first realising. An army of intention loving, Violet Gray wearers globally – now that would be cool….
