I am lucky enough to live very (dangerously) close to one of the most incredibly art stores in Melbourne, Signed + Numbered. For those of your who have wandered by but never walked in (shame on you), you will know it as the store with the eye catching art in the windows and a very cute whippet named Dexter hanging around the door.
Signed + Numbered is the brainchild of Jacqui Vidal, who on a trip to Europe about five years ago stumbled across a busy little art shop in Paris, a happy accident that inspired something in the former event planner and evolved into the concept behind her now very successful ‘busy little art shops’ in Melbourne.
With no formal art education, background, or really any knowledge at all of the art world Jacqui came home from her overseas trip with a seed planted in her head and decided to open what she says is ‘the art gallery I would want to go to’. Non-pretentious, affordable and something for everyone; Signed + Numbered is the people friendly art shop, where you don’t need an art degree and black AMEX card to feel like you belong.
At Signed + Numbered they aim to please. “Our aim of the space is that no matter what your taste, you can walk in and find at least one thing you absolutely love.” Mission accomplished in my case! My walls are happily plastered with the works of two incredibly talented S+N artists, Hobart based Kelly Smith and Canadian artist Jenny Liz Rome.
Jacqui works with artists from all around the world and has them create ‘Limited Edition’ works exclusively for Signed + Numbered. Around 90% of the works in store are limited edition and the others are pieces Jacqui just can’t resist. “Sometimes I’ll see something amazing and I just have to have it in the shop,” she says.
Signed + Numbered stock an amazing range of works by Australian artists including Kelly Smith, Maurice Golotta, Amy Howard, Bec Winnel, Kareena Zerefos, Kaff-Eine and more. Far too many to list them all! You will have to go and see for yourself…… You can find Signed + Numbered in two Melbourne locations (153 Greville Street, Prahran + 7A Degraves Street, Melbourne) or online.
