In case you’ve been living under a rock the past two years and hadn’t heard yet, Hobart is ‘the’ place to be right now. All the cool kids are packing their weekend bag and boarding planes to a state once known for nothing but the cold and well, I’m Tasmanian myself so I can’t say anything bad… but you all know where I’m going with this.
Living under that chilly but picturesque mountain there is one very cool kid who doesn’t have to pack her weekend bag, because she is lucky enough to call Hobart home. Kelly Smith of Birdy and Me is one of Australia’s most loved fashion and beauty illustrators and I must say she’s doing the little Island State very proud, or maybe that’s just me because I’m lucky enough to have know her since her art was just a hobby and a dream. Here she is all grown up with an incredible career and a talent that I swear just continues to get better and better.
Kelly takes her inspirations from the pages of fashion magazines that line every surface of her house, the films she watches all day as she draws and the creepy but beautiful fairytales she grew up on. She spends hours on each carefully crafted pencil illustration, bringing life to the page in a way most of us could only dream of doing – personally I struggle to produce an attractive stick man. Using water colour and digital effects to add extra elements to her pieces, the final results are beautiful enough to make a grown woman jealous of a girl in a drawing – as if there aren’t enough real life girls out there to be jealous of!
Ok so now for the long list of Kelly’s achievements… settle down with a drink and some popcorn everyone, because this is a good one! Since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art from The Tasmanian School of Art, she has gone on to illustrate for a number of local and international clients including: Jenny Packham, H&M, NET-A-PORTER, VOGUE Australia, Samantha Wills, Portmans, and The Sunday Times’ Style. Her work has been published in UK InStyle, Russh, Nylon, NET-A-PORTER magazine, TASCHEN’s ‘Illustration Now! Vol. 4’ and ‘Illustration Now! Fashion’, and most recently in a series of illustrated books with Laurence King Publishers titled ‘Sticker Fashionista.’
It seemed weird and almost boring to interview someone I’ve known for nearly half my life, so instead I asked her to share a day in the life of Kelly Smith in the lovely town she calls home, Hobart.

* Disclaimer * I know for a fact she doesn’t spend EVERY day wandering the streets of Hobart, sipping soy mochas, seeing films and flower shopping – this is real life not an episode of Sex and the City- she’s usually glued to her well decorated desk drawing her butt off. We’ll call this a ‘leisure day’ in the life of Kelly Smith. For more beautiful pics of Kelly’s life and work follow her on Instagram @birdyandme
