Two incredibly talented Melbourne ladies have joined their creative forces together to create every girls dream. What is it you ask? The perfect Autumn lippie, of course! Best known for her soul stirring music, Helen from Gossling has teamed up with Shanghai Suzy creator Joanna to create a limited edition Gossling Lippie in a beautiful bright coral shade, perfect for adding a pop of colour to your wardrobe as the days get cooler.
I’ve been a huge fan of Gossling for many years now and I even have a signed copy of her first EP to prove it! It has been incredible following her journey over these past few years and I’m so excited to share this interview with her following the release of not only her very own lippie but also her debut album, Harvest of Gold.
AF: Gossling, your face has appeared on a pretty fantastic range of memorabilia over the past few years, from album covers to magnets, posters and magazines – but did you ever think you would see your face on your very own lipstick!?
Gossling: No never! How crazy is that? The idea of having my own lipstick came from a bit of a joke with friends. We were thinking of fun merchandise ideas and came up with the pun ‘Gloss-ling’. Then it turned out one of my friends actually had a friend who owned a lipstick company, so that’s how I met Joanna and that’s how it all got started. I still look at the packaging now and think, “Really? I have my own lipstick shade!” So wonderful and bizarre.
AF: Can you talk us through the exciting process of creating your own Shanghai Suzy lipstick?
Gossling: I was so happy that Joanna was keen to collaborated on this project. Coming up with the lipstick shade was really fun. I gave Jo a list of shades that I enjoy wearing that suited my skin tone and from there she created the bright coral shade and formula that is now The Gossling Lippie. All of her lipsticks are super moisturizing and have a yummy grape bubblegum scent.
AF: Joanna, what made Gossling the perfect match for Shanghai Suzy?
Joanna: Gossling and Shanghai Suzy are both Melbourne born and bred, two very different but aligned expressions of self and art. I think they’re a great match – both Gossling and Shanghai Suzy are somewhat quirky, a little off the mainstream track, and both completely loveable!
AF: The Gossling Lippie is a beautiful bright coral shade. How should girls style the rest of their make-up to match?
Joanna: With a statement lipstick this bright, I would recommend to keep other makeup minimal and make it all about the lips! Your favourite foundation with a dusting of bronzer to compliment the coral is a good start. A nude or light bronze/toffee eyeshadow with a coat of mascara and semi-structured brows would complete the look.
AF: Gossling, you have achieved so much in your music career over the past few years. Aside from having your very own Shanghai Suzy lipstick (!!!) what have been some of the other highlights?
Gossling: Yes the last few years have been really fun. I feel incredibly lucky to be doing what I’m doing. We’ve had two trips overseas playing at festivals in the United States and shows in London. I’ve got to perform at some of the best music festivals Australia has to offer like Splendour in The Grass and The Falls Festivals. Performing at the ARIAs was also a huge highlight of mine. As well as just releasing my debut album Harvest Of Gold, that was a huge career highlight for me.
AF: Gossling, your success allows you the opportunity to meet and work with incredibly talented Australians such as Joanna, not just in music but fashion, art, photography and so on. Are you continually amazed by how much talent there is in this Country?
Gossling: Australia is such a wonderfully talented country. Our arts culture absolutely thrives and I think finally we’re beginning to get noticed more for everything that we create all the way over on this side of the world. You see it in fashion with the number of Australian fashion designers making waves overseas.
I’m constantly being asked in interviews why so many Australian bands are doing so well overseas at the moment. I think we’re so far away from the rest of the world that we have to work twice as hard to get noticed and the effort that we all have to put in is really paying off.
AF: What’s next for Gossling?
Gossing: For the next little while I’ll be on tour supporting Vance Joy on his national Australian tour. I’ll also be playing a show in Adelaide at the Bird in Hand Winery late May. Then I’m hoping to play a few more shows in Australia before heading back to the US and UK to release my album over there. I’d really love to play a run of shows through the US, UK and some of Europe. That’s the dream anyway! Fingers crossed I can make it happen.
